The Passionist Nuns of St. Joseph Monastery are a cloistered religious community in rural Kentucky. They asked me to redesign their website, which was built from html in the late 1990's and maintained by a 75-year-old nun who taught herself how to code!
The nuns wanted a website that reflected their contemplative, peaceful, feminine character. Yet they had a huge amount of content from their old site. It was quite an adventure mapping out this site, but we all love the result!
The site uses an attractive scrolling index page format for the homepage that highlights bold photography. An index page is also used for the "Vocations" section and the "Retreat House" page, to highlight the importance of these parts of the site.
As always, the site is designed to be just as attractive and functional viewed on a mobile device.
The retreat house page uses many photos to give a feel for the beautiful, tranquil atmosphere. Slideshow image galleries display the features of the retreat house, rather than simply listing them.
The nuns wanted a custom Google map that shows locations of other Passionist monasteries around the world. It was hard work pinpointing some of the locations in South America and Indonesia, but we did it! A custom icon representing Passionist spirituality designates each monastery.
